Historical context

Declared emperor by the Praetorian Guard following the assassination of his nephew Caligula, Claudius was the son of Drusus the Elder and Antonia Minor. During his reign, Claudius proved an able administrator who restored imperial finances, carried out major building projects, and initiated the conquest of Britain.

Struck at the Rome mint, this silver denarius represents the standard Roman silver coin denomination originally introduced during the Second Punic War. The coin commemorates the emperor's father, featuring the laureate head of Nero Claudius Drusus alongside the obverse legend "NERO CLAVDIVS DRVSVS GERMANICVS IMP". The reverse portrays a triumphal arch surmounted by an equestrian statue between two trophies with captives at foot, accompanied by the inscription "DE GERM".
