Historical context
Declared emperor by the Praetorian Guard after the assassination of Caligula, he was an able administrator who expanded the bureaucracy, restored imperial finances, and initiated the conquest of Britain. Despite his governance, he was viewed as vulnerable by elements of the nobility throughout his reign.
Struck at the Rome mint, this silver denarius represents the standard Roman silver coin used across the empire from circa 211 BC into the third century AD. The piece features the emperor alongside Agrippina the Younger, who was his wife and is contended by many ancient authors to have murdered him prior to the succession of her son Nero.
