Historical context

Born in Lugdunum to Drusus the Elder and Antonia Minor, he had been excluded from public office for much of his early life due to physical infirmities. Following the assassination of Caligula, he was declared emperor by the Praetorian Guard, serving as an administrator who expanded the bureaucracy and initiated the conquest of Britain.

Struck at the Rome mint, this bronze sestertius features an obverse dedicated to the emperor's father, Nero Claudius Drusus, inscribed with the legend "NERO CLAVDIVS DRVSVS GERMANICVS IMP". The reverse portrays Claudius himself, togate and seated on a curule chair, surrounded by various arms and holding a branch, accompanied by the inscription "TI CLAVDIVS CAESAR AVG P M TR P IMP S C". In imperial Roman commerce, the sestertius represented a denomination nominally valued at two and a half asses, or one quarter of a denarius.
