Historical context
Claudius ruled as the fourth Roman emperor of the Julio-Claudian dynasty from AD 41 until his death in AD 54. The last adult male of his family following Caligula's assassination, he was declared emperor by the Praetorian Guard. Despite having been excluded from public office earlier in life, he became an able administrator who restored imperial finances, built infrastructure, and initiated the Roman conquest of Britain.
Struck at Rome, this sestertius features an obverse portrait of the emperor paired with the inscription "TI CLAVDIVS CAESAR AVG P M TR P IMP". During the Roman Empire, the sestertius served as a large coin, having developed from a denomination valued at one quarter of a denarius or two and a half bronze asses, an amount useful for commerce. The reverse displays an oak-wreath enclosing the legend "EX S C OB CIVES SERVATOS".
