Historical context
Claudius served as Roman emperor from AD 41 until his death in AD 54, representing the fourth ruler of the Julio-Claudian dynasty. Declared emperor by the Praetorian Guard following the assassination of his nephew Caligula, he was the last surviving adult male of his family. Although previously excluded from public office, Claudius proved to be an efficient administrator who restored the finances of the empire.
Struck at the mint of Rome, this bronze as was issued under the authority of Claudius. The obverse bears his portrait and the inscription TI CLAVDIVS CAESAR AVG P M TR P IMP. The reverse carries the legend LIBERTAS AVGVSTA SC and depicts Libertas draped, facing front, extending her left hand and holding a pileus in her right hand.
