Historical context

This bronze sestertius was issued under the Roman emperor Claudius, who ruled the Roman Empire from AD 41 until his death in AD 54. Claudius, the fourth ruler of the Julio-Claudian dynasty, was declared emperor by the Praetorian Guard after the assassination of his nephew Caligula. The coin was produced at the mint of Rome.

During the Roman Empire, the sestertius was an established denomination, having originated in the Republic with a nominal value of two and a half asses and representing one quarter of a denarius. The obverse features the laureate head of Claudius with the legend TI CLAVDIVS CAESAR AVG P M TR P IMP. The reverse depicts a triumphal arch surmounted by an equestrian statue between two trophies, with a rider holding a spear, accompanied by the inscription NERO CLAVDIVS DRVSVS GERMAN IMP S C, recalling his father, Drusus the Elder.
