Historical context
Lucius Clodius Macer was a Roman imperial legatus in Africa during the reign of Nero. In May 68, he revolted and cut off the food supply of Rome, possibly instigated by Calvia Crispinilla. Macer commanded Legio III Augusta and raised Legio I Macriana liberatrix. In October 68, Galba had him assassinated by the procurator Trebonius Garutianus, an act in which the centurion Papirus was also implicated.
During his revolt, Macer operated a small mint in Carthage or Cirta, striking silver coinage such as the denarius, which was the standard Roman silver coin from circa 211 BC into the third century AD. Numismatists note that his coinage varied in quality and often exhibited errors. This denarius features the obverse legend "L CLODI MACRI CARTHAGO S C" alongside a bust of Carthago with a cornucopiae, paired with a reverse depicting a triskelis with the head of Medusa, corn ears, and the legend "SICILIA".
