Historical context

Lucius Clodius Macer was a legatus of the Roman Empire in Africa during the reign of Nero. In May 68 he revolted, cutting off Rome's food supply, and raised Legio I Macriana liberatrix alongside Legio III Augusta. Suspected of imperial ambitions, Macer was killed in October 68 on the orders of Galba by the procurator Trebonius Garutianus.

During his rebellion, Macer operated a small mint in Carthage or Cirta, where no gold coinage was produced. His silver coinage included the denarius, which had served as the standard Roman silver denomination since its introduction around 211 BC during the Second Punic War. This issue features the head of Roma with the inscription "ROMA S C" on the obverse, paired with a trophy, two pointy oval shields, and the legend "L CLODI MACRI" on the reverse.
