Historical context

Lucius Clodius Macer was a legatus of the Roman Empire in Africa during the reign of Nero. In May 68, he revolted and cut off the food supply of Rome. Although encouraged by Galba, Macer raised Legio I Macriana liberatrix alongside Legio III Augusta, which he already commanded. Galba had him killed in October 68 by Trebonius Garutianus.

Macer operated a small mint in either Cirta or Carthage, producing silver coinage without any recorded gold output. As the standard Roman silver coin since circa 211 BC, the denarius formed part of this issue. Struck at Carthage, this denarius bears his portrait with the legend "L CLODIVS MACER S C", alongside a reverse showing a war ship with 11 oars and 8 oarsmen accompanied by the legend "PROPRAE AFRICAE".
