Historical context

Lucius Clodius Macer was a legatus of the Roman Empire in Africa under Nero who revolted in May 68. During this rebellion, Macer cut off Rome's food supply and raised the legion Legio I Macriana liberatrix alongside Legio III Augusta. Suspecting Macer of harbouring imperial ambitions, Galba had him killed in October 68 by the procurator Trebonius Garutianus.

During his revolt, Macer operated a small mint at Carthage or Cirta that produced silver coinage such as the denarius, the standard Roman silver coin since the Second Punic War, but no gold coinage. Numismatists note that Macer's issues varied in quality and often displayed mint errors. This denarius features the obverse legend "L CLODIVS MACER S C" accompanied by the reverse legend "PROPRA AFRICA", alongside the depiction of a war ship.
