Historical context

Lucius Clodius Macer was a legatus of the Roman Empire in Africa during the reign of Nero. In May 68, he revolted and cut off the food supply of Rome. Alongside the Legio III Augusta, which he already commanded, he raised a new legion, Legio I Macriana liberatrix. Although Galba initially encouraged him, Galba later had Macer killed by the procurator Trebonius Garutianus in October 68.

Macer operated a small mint, located in Carthage or Cirta, where no gold coinage was produced. This silver denarius represents the standard Roman silver denomination introduced during the Second Punic War. The obverse depicts a draped bust of Africa wearing an elephant-skin head-dress, accompanied by the legend "L CLODI MACRI LIBERATRIX S C". The reverse features an aquila flanked by two vexilla, bearing the legend "MACRIA N A LIB LEG I", referring directly to the newly raised Legio I Macriana liberatrix.
