Historical context

The Year of the Four Emperors, AD 69, was the first civil war of the Roman Empire, characterised by shifting allegiances, rebellions, and claimants in Rome and the provinces. Following the death of Nero in AD 68 and the brief rule of Galba, Otho claimed power with the backing of the Praetorian Guard, only to be challenged and defeated by Vitellius, who had been acclaimed emperor by the legions of the Rhine. This anonymous denarius reflects the intense political instability of the civil wars, where contending factions relied on and appealed to the loyalty of the army and the Praetorian Guard.
