Historical context

This gold coin was struck under an anonymous authority during the Roman Civil Wars of the Roman Empire, a broad imperial period spanning from 27 BC to AD 476. Produced at an uncertain mint, the issue departs from standard imperial coinage by omitting the name and portrait of an individual ruler.

Struck as an aureus, the piece belongs to the primary gold denomination of ancient Rome, which had been standardized during the Empire and was valued at 25 silver denarii or 100 sestertii. The obverse features a diademed, bearded, and draped bust of Jupiter facing left with a small palm branch, accompanied by the inscription "I O M CAPITOLINVS". The reverse depicts a veiled figure of Vesta seated on a throne, holding a patera and a torch, framed by the legend "VESTA P R QVIRITIVM".
