Historical context

This denarius belongs to the anonymous issues produced during the civil wars of the Roman Empire in 68–69 AD. In 68 AD, rebellions led by Vindex in Gallia Lugdunensis and Clodius Macer in Africa sparked an era of conflict culminating in the Year of the Four Emperors in AD 69. Following the suicide of Nero on 9 June 68 AD after being declared a public enemy by the Senate, shifting allegiances and multiple claimants created widespread turmoil across Rome and the provinces. As the standard Roman silver coin since the Second Punic War, the denarius served as an essential medium during these turbulent military struggles.
