Historical context

Augustus became the first Roman emperor in 27 BC, establishing the principate following years of civil conflict. Seeking to secure the succession, he adopted his grandsons Gaius Caesar and Lucius Caesar, born to Julia and Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa, raising them as his joint heirs. Both youths enjoyed rapid political elevations, but their promising careers were cut short when Lucius died in Massilia in 2 AD and Gaius died from illness in Lycia in 4 AD.
