Historical context

The denarius served as the standard Roman silver coin from its introduction during the Second Punic War around 211 BC. In AD 68, revolts erupted against Nero, led initially by figures such as Vindex in Gallia Lugdunensis and Galba in Hispania, leading to Nero taking his own life. This initiated the Year of the Four Emperors in AD 69, the first civil war of the Roman Empire, characterised by multiple claimants, rebellions, and shifting provincial allegiances across Rome. Anonymous coinages of this period reflect the political upheaval and contested imperial authority.
