Historical context

Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus Germanicus, known as Caligula, was the third Roman emperor and ruled from AD 37 until his assassination in AD 41. He succeeded Tiberius at the age of 24, being the son of Germanicus and Agrippina the Elder, granddaughter of Augustus. This denarius was struck in Lugdunum, an important city founded in 43 BC that served as the capital of the province of Gallia Lugdunensis.
