Historical context

This silver coin was issued under the Roman Empire by the authority of Gaius, also known as Caligula, from the mint at Rome.

The piece is a denarius, which served as the standard Roman silver coin from its introduction during the Second Punic War around 211 BC until the reign of Gordian III. The obverse bears the laureate head of Gaius facing right, accompanied by the inscription "C CAESAR AVG PON M TR POT III COS III". The reverse depicts the draped bust of Agrippina facing right, showing her hair waved downwards from the brow, tied in a long plait at the back, and with a loose lock falling down her neck, paired with the legend "AGRIPPINA MAT C CAES AVG GERM".
