Historical context

This bronze coin was issued at the mint of Rome under the authority of Gaius/Caligula during the period of the Roman Empire, which extended from 27 BC to AD 476. The mint at Rome operated as the central facility for supplying base-metal imperial coinage during this imperial era.

The denomination of this issue is a dupondius. In the imperial system established during the time of Augustus, the dupondius was valued at two asses, half of a sestertius, or one-eighth of a denarius. At the height of the Roman Empire, a dupondius was roughly equivalent to the cost of a loaf of bread or a sextarius (approximately 0.5 litres) of wine. The coin's obverse depicts Nero and Drusus Caesar riding right with flying cloaks, inscribed with the legend "NERO ET DRVSVS CAESARES". The reverse bears the inscription "C CAESAR AVG GERMANICVS PON M TR POT" surrounding the central letters "S C".
