Historical context

Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus Germanicus, nicknamed Caligula, was the third Roman emperor, ruling from AD 37 until his assassination in AD 41. His father, the Roman general Germanicus Julius Caesar, had campaigned in Germania and was adopted by Tiberius in AD 4 before dying in Antioch in AD 19. Caligula honoured his father on coinage struck at Rome, issuing denominations including the as, a copper and bronze coin of the Roman Empire.
