Historical context
This bronze coin was issued under the authority of Gaius/Caligula at the mint of Rome during the Roman Empire. Struck within the imperial era spanning 27 BC to AD 476, the issue forms part of the state coinage produced in the capital under imperial rule.
After bronze coinage was reduced to the semuncial standard around 90 BC, the quadrans served as the lowest-valued coin in production, remaining in sporadic manufacture until the reign of Antoninus Pius. Unlike other denominations of the Roman Empire, it rarely carried an imperial portrait because of its small size. The obverse features a pileus flanked by the letters "S C", accompanied by the legend "C CAESAR DIVI AVG PRON AVG". The reverse displays the letters "RCC" prominent in the centre of the field, enclosed by the legend "PON M TR P III P P COS DES III".
