Historical context

Gaius, widely known as Caligula, was the third Roman emperor and ruled from AD 37 until his assassination in AD 41. He was the son of Germanicus, a prominent Roman general and politician celebrated for his campaigns against Germanic tribes. Germanicus had died in Antioch in AD 19, leaving Gaius as the sole surviving male from the bitter feud that followed between his family and Emperor Tiberius. Minted in Rome, this bronze as was issued under Caligula to commemorate his deceased father.
