Historical context
This bronze coin was issued at the mint of Rome under the authority of Gaius, also known as Caligula, within the Roman Empire. Roman imperial coinage of this era formed part of an administrative system operating across the imperial period, with official state production situated in Rome.
After bronze coinage was reduced to the semuncial standard around 90 BC, it became the lowest-valued coin in production. Produced sporadically until the reign of Antoninus Pius, the denomination rarely bore the image of the emperor because of its small size. On this issue, the obverse features a pileus flanked by "S C" alongside the inscription "C CAESAR DIVI AVG PRON AVG", while the reverse displays "RCC" in the centre encircled by the legend "PON M TR P IIII P P COS TERT".
