Historical context

Gaius, nicknamed Caligula, was the third Roman emperor, ruling from AD 37 until his assassination in AD 41. He was the son of the general Germanicus and Agrippina the Elder, a prominent granddaughter of Augustus who died in AD 33 following a bitter feud with Emperor Tiberius. Struck at the mint of Rome, this brass sestertius honours the memory of the emperor's late mother, whose remains had earlier been interred in the Mausoleum of Augustus.
