Historical context
Gaius, also called Caligula, was the third Roman emperor, ruling from AD 37 until his assassination in AD 41. He was the son of the general Germanicus, who had waged campaigns against Germanic tribes from AD 14 to 16, avenged the Roman defeat in the Teutoburg Forest, and retrieved two lost legionary eagles before receiving a triumph in Rome in AD 17. Germanicus died in Antioch in AD 19, leaving Gaius as the eventual sole male survivor of his immediate family. This dupondius honours Germanicus and his recovery of the standards.
