Historical context

Gaius, commonly known as Caligula, was the third Roman emperor, reigning from AD 37 until his assassination in AD 41. He was the son of Germanicus and Agrippina the Elder, the daughter of Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa. Agrippa had been a leading Roman general and close associate of Emperor Augustus, famously securing command of the victorious fleet at the Battle of Actium in 31 BC before his death in 12 BC.
