Historical context

Servius Sulpicius Galba ruled as Roman emperor for seven months, from 8 June AD 68 until 15 January AD 69. He was the first ruler of the Year of the Four Emperors, assuming the throne after Nero's suicide with the backing of the Praetorian Guard. Before becoming emperor, Galba had served as governor of several provinces, including Hispania, which Nero had granted to him.

This silver denarius was struck at the mint of Rome under Galba's authority. The denarius served as the standard Roman silver coin following its introduction during the Second Punic War. The coin bears the obverse inscription IMP SER GALBA CAESAR AVG, while the reverse design displays the personification Hispania, holding a poppy, corn-ears, a round shield, and two spears, accompanied by the legend HISPANIA.
