Historical context

Struck at Rome, this coin is a dupondius, a denomination valued at two asses, half a sestertius, or one-eighth of a denarius during the imperial era. At the height of the Roman Empire, a dupondius roughly equalled the cost of a loaf of bread or a sextarius of wine. The obverse depicts the bust of Galba with the legend "IMP SER GALBA AVG TR P", while the reverse encloses the inscription "S P Q R O B CIV SER" within an oak wreath.
