Historical context

Servius Sulpicius Galba ruled as Roman emperor for seven months, from 8 June AD 68 until 15 January 69. Taking the throne following the suicide of Nero with the support of the Praetorian Guard, he became the first emperor in the Year of the Four Emperors. Previously a governor of Gallia Aquitania, Germania Superior, Africa, and Hispania, his brief reign ended when he was murdered on the orders of Otho.

This bronze as was struck at the mint of Rome under Galba's authority. The obverse presents his laureate portrait accompanied by the legend "SER GALBA IMP CAES AVG TR P". The reverse depicts an aquila set upon a prow positioned between two standards on prows, with each of the three prows bearing a wreath, alongside the legend "S C".
