Historical context

Galba ruled as Roman emperor for seven months, from 8 June AD 68 until 15 January AD 69. He was the first ruler of the Year of the Four Emperors, assuming imperial power after Nero's suicide and with the backing of the Praetorian Guard. His brief reign came to an end when he was murdered on the orders of Otho, who succeeded him.

Struck at the mint of Rome, this bronze sestertius features an obverse portrait of the emperor accompanied by the legend "IMP SER GALBA CAESAR AVG TR P". During the Roman Empire, the sestertius was a coin used in commerce, having been valued under the monetary system as one quarter of a denarius. The reverse depicts Concordia seated upon a throne, holding an olive branch and a sceptre, surrounded by the inscription "CONCORD AVG S C".
