Historical context

Struck at Rome, this bronze sestertius features an obverse portrait of the emperor accompanied by the inscription "SER GALBA IMP CAESAR AVG TR P". In the Roman monetary system, the sestertius was nominally valued at two and a half asses, equivalent to one quarter of a denarius, a denomination used in commerce. The reverse depicts Libertas holding a pileus and a rod, framed by the legend "LIBERTAS PVBLICA S C".
