Historical context

Galba was a Roman emperor who ruled for seven months from 8 June AD 68 until 15 January AD 69. Having served as governor of Hispania under Nero, he took advantage of Nero's suicide and the defeat of Vindex's rebellion to assume the throne with the support of the Praetorian Guard, becoming the first ruler of the Year of the Four Emperors.

Struck at Tarraco, this silver coin belongs to the denomination of the denarius, which served as the standard Roman silver coin from c. 211 BC until the third century AD. The piece bears the obverse title "GALBA IMPERATOR" accompanied by a laureate portrait of the emperor with a globe at the point of his neck. The reverse carries the legend "ROMA VICTRIX" around a depiction of Roma standing in military dress with a foot on a globe, holding a branch and spear.
