Historical context

Galba was a Roman emperor who ruled for seven months from 8 June AD 68 to 15 January 69, becoming the first emperor in the Year of the Four Emperors. A former governor of Gallia Aquitania, Germania Superior, Africa, and Hispania, he assumed the throne following the defeat of Vindex's rebellion and Emperor Nero's suicide, supported by the Praetorian Guard.

This silver denarius was struck under Galba's authority at the mint of Vindobona. The denarius served as the standard Roman silver coin from c. 211 BC until the third century AD. The coin features the obverse inscription SER GALBA IMP alongside Galba in military dress on horseback, while the reverse bears three draped female busts with the legend TRES GALLIAE.
