Historical context

Nero was Roman emperor from AD 54 until his death in AD 68, representing the final ruler of the Julio-Claudian dynasty. Having been adopted by the emperor Claudius, Nero ascended the imperial throne with the backing of both the Praetorian Guard and the Senate. In the earlier years of his administration, he was guided by his mother Agrippina the Younger, his tutor Seneca the Younger, and Sextus Afranius Burrus.

Struck at the Rome mint, this gold aureus formed part of ancient Rome's primary gold denomination, which had been standardized during the Empire and was valued at 25 silver denarii. The coin pairs the obverse legend "NERO CAESAR AVG IMP" with imperial titles on the reverse reading "PONTIF MAX TR P V P P". Within the reverse legend, an oak-wreath encloses the inscription "EX S C".
