Historical context
Nero was Roman emperor from AD 54 until his death in AD 68, serving as the final ruler of the Julio-Claudian dynasty. Having ascended the throne following the death of Emperor Claudius with the backing of the Praetorian Guard and the Senate, Nero sought to rule independently during a reign marked by governance focused on diplomacy, trade, and culture before his fall from power in AD 68.
This gold aureus was minted in Rome. The aureus functioned as the primary gold denomination of the Roman Empire, standardised to equal twenty-five silver denarii or one hundred sestertii. The coin displays the obverse inscription "NERO CAESAR AVG IMP" and bears the reverse inscription "PONTIF MAX TR P VII COS IIII P P EX S C", depicting the veiled and draped figure of Ceres holding two corn-ears and a torch.
