Historical context

Nero was Roman emperor from AD 54 until his death in AD 68, serving as the final ruler of the Julio-Claudian dynasty. Adopted by Emperor Claudius, he ascended the throne with support from the Praetorian Guard and the Senate. Nero governed until unrest culminated in his condemnation by the Senate and subsequent suicide, an event followed by the civil conflicts of the Year of the Four Emperors.

This bronze sestertius was struck at the Rome mint under Nero's authority. In the Roman Empire, the sestertius served as a coin denomination valued in commerce at two and a half asses, or one quarter of a silver denarius. The reverse depicts the Temple of Janus with closed double doors and a garland hung across them, accompanied by the inscription "PACE P R TERRA MARIQ PARTA IANVM CLVSIT S C". The obverse identifies Nero with the legend "NERO CLAVD CAESAR AVG GER P M TR P IMP P P".
