Historical context

Claudius ruled as Roman emperor from AD 41 until his death on 13 October AD 54. Following his death, his adopted son and heir Nero ascended the Roman imperial throne with the backing of the Praetorian Guard and the Senate. Nero issued this gold aureus from Rome in AD 54, honouring the deified Claudius at the start of his reign.
