Historical context

Struck at the Rome mint, this gold aureus represented the principal gold denomination of the Roman Empire, which was originally valued at twenty-five silver denarii or one hundred sestertii. The coin bears the obverse legend "NERO CAESAR", while the reverse displays the emperor standing in a toga and radiate crown, holding a branch alongside Victory on a globe, accompanied by the inscription "AVGVSTVS GERMANICVS".
