Historical context
Nero was Roman emperor from AD 54 until his suicide in AD 68, serving as the final emperor of the Julio-Claudian dynasty. Ascending to the throne after his adoption by Emperor Claudius, Nero's governance encompassed diplomacy, trade, and culture alongside military conflicts. During his reign, the general Corbulo fought the Roman–Parthian War of 58–63, ultimately making peace with the hostile Parthian Empire.
Struck at the Rome mint, this gold aureus represented the principal gold denomination of the Roman Empire, originally valued at 25 silver denarii and 100 sestertii. The coin bears the obverse legend "NERO CAESAR AVGVSTVS" and portrays Nero with a beard. Its reverse design depicts the Temple of Janus with closed doors, paired with the legend "IANVM CLVSIT PACE P R TERRA MARIQ PARTA".
