Historical context

Nero, born Lucius Domitius Ahenobarbus, was the final Roman emperor of the Julio-Claudian dynasty, reigning from AD 54 until his suicide in AD 68. Following his adoption by Emperor Claudius and Claudius's subsequent death, Nero ascended the throne with the support of the Senate and the Praetorian Guard. His governance focused primarily on trade, diplomacy, and cultural pursuits across the Roman Empire.

Standardised under the Empire, the aureus held an official value of twenty-five silver denarii or one hundred sestertii. The piece pairs an obverse featuring the emperor with the legend "NERO CAESAR AVGVSTVS" and a reverse depicting Jupiter seated with a sceptre and thunderbolt, inscribed "IVPPITER CVSTOS".
