Historical context

Nero was Roman emperor from AD 54 until his suicide in AD 68, serving as the final ruler of the Julio-Claudian dynasty. Having ascended the throne following the death of his adoptive father, Emperor Claudius, his practical governance encompassed diplomacy, trade, and culture, alongside military events such as the Roman–Parthian War, the suppression of Boudica's revolt in Britain, and the outbreak of the First Jewish–Roman War.

Struck at the mint of Lugdunum, this bronze as was issued under Nero's imperial authority. The coin bears the obverse inscription "IMP NERO CAESAR AVG P MAX TR P P P" around the bare head of the emperor, while the reverse depicts the Genius Populi Romani holding a patera over a flaming altar and a cornucopiae, accompanied by the legend "GENIO AVGVSTI S C".
