Historical context

Nero was Roman emperor from AD 54 until his death on 9 June AD 68, serving as the final ruler of the Julio-Claudian dynasty. Having ascended the throne following the death of Emperor Claudius, his practical contributions to Rome's imperial governance concentrated on diplomacy, trade, and culture, while his military forces engaged in campaigns such as the Roman–Parthian War.

This bronze as was struck under Nero's authority at the mint of Lugdunum. The obverse features the bare head of the emperor facing left, accompanied by a small globe at the point of the neck and the legend "IMP NERO CAESAR AVG P MAX TR P P P". The reverse depicts a winged, draped Victory moving left and carrying a shield inscribed "S P Q R", framed by the legend "S C".
