Historical context

Struck at the Rome mint, this silver denarius represents the standard Roman silver denomination introduced during the Second Punic War. The coin carries the obverse legend "IMP NERO CAESAR AVGVSTVS" accompanying a bearded, laureate portrait of the emperor. The reverse pairs the inscription "IVPPITER CVSTOS" with an image of Jupiter, seated upon a throne holding a sceptre and thunderbolt.
