Historical context

Otho ruled as Roman emperor for three months, from 15 January to 16 April 69, during the period known as the Year of the Four Emperors. Formerly governor of Lusitania, he allied with Galba before revolting against and murdering him in Rome. Otho's brief reign was dominated by the rebellion of Vitellius, culminating in the Battle of Bedriacum and Otho's suicide.

Struck at the Rome mint, this coin was produced as a denarius, the standard Roman silver coin introduced during the Second Punic War. The obverse depicts the bare head of Otho accompanied by the legend IMP OTHO CAESAR AVG TR P. The reverse portrays the goddess Vesta, draped and seated, holding a patera and a sceptre, beneath the inscription PONT MAX.
