Historical context

Marcus Salvius Otho was Roman emperor for three months, ruling from 15 January to 16 April 69 as the second emperor of the Year of the Four Emperors. After governing Lusitania and joining Galba's march on Rome, Otho revolted and murdered Galba. His brief reign was defined by the rebellion of Vitellius, commander in Germania Inferior, which concluded with Otho's suicide after the Battle of Bedriacum.

This silver denarius was struck at Rome during Otho's brief administration. The obverse features Otho's bare head accompanied by the imperial title "IMP M OTHO CAESAR AVG TR P". The reverse depicts Pax, draped and holding a branch and caduceus, alongside the legend "PAX ORBIS TERRARVM".
