Historical context
Tiberius became the second Roman emperor upon the death of his stepfather Augustus in AD 14, ruling until his own death on 16 March AD 37. Augustus, who established the Roman Empire and ruled from 27 BC to AD 14, had previously designated Tiberius as his successor following the deaths of Gaius and Lucius Caesar. This gold aureus, struck at Lugdunum during Tiberius's reign, directly reflects his dynastic lineage by pairing his portrait with that of the deified Augustus.
