Historical context

Struck at Lugdunum, this silver coin is a denarius, the standard Roman silver denomination introduced during the Second Punic War around 211 BC. The obverse depicts the laureate head of the emperor accompanied by the inscription "TI CAESAR DIVI AVG F AVGVSTVS", while the reverse bears the title "PONTIF MAXIM" alongside a draped female figure seated upon a chair, holding a branch and a long sceptre.
