Historical context

Tiberius was the second Roman emperor, reigning from AD 14 until AD 37 as part of the Julio-Claudian dynasty. He succeeded his stepfather Augustus, having previously served as an accomplished diplomat and military general whose northern conquests helped secure the empire's frontier. Struck at the mint of Lugdunum, this coinage belongs to Tiberius's imperial administration following his accession at the age of 55.

This gold aureus formed part of ancient Rome's standard high-denomination gold currency, which was valued at 25 silver denarii. The obverse bears Tiberius's portrait alongside the legend "TI CAESAR DIVI AVG F AVGVSTVS", while the reverse records his titles with the legend "TR POT XVII IMP VII". The reverse depiction shows the emperor standing in a four-horse quadriga holding a laurel-branch and an eagle-tipped sceptre.
