Historical context

Tiberius was the second Roman emperor, ruling from AD 14 until his death in AD 37 as part of the Julio-Claudian dynasty. Having succeeded his stepfather Augustus, Tiberius had previously established a reputation as a diplomat and general on the northern frontier. Despite experiencing difficult relations with the Roman Senate and later withdrawing from Rome in AD 26, he proved to be an efficient administrator.

Produced at the mint of Rome, this bronze dupondius represents a denomination valued in the imperial monetary system at two asses, half a sestertius, or one-eighth of a denarius. The obverse presents a laureate head of Tiberius with the legend "TI CAESAR DIVI AVG F AVGVST IMP VIII", while the reverse displays his bust set upon an ornamental round shield surrounded by laurel, palmettes, and petals, accompanied by the inscription "CLEMENTIAE S C".
