Historical context

Tiberius Julius Caesar Augustus ruled as the second Roman emperor from AD 14 until his death in AD 37, reigning as the second monarch of the Julio-Claudian dynasty following his stepfather Augustus. Earlier in his career, Tiberius and his wife Vipsania had a son, Drusus Julius Caesar. Although Augustus had required Tiberius to adopt Germanicus around AD 4, Drusus remained Tiberius's natural son until his death in AD 23.

Struck at Rome under the authority of Tiberius, this bronze sestertius features a reverse inscribed with large letters "S C" and the legend "DRVSVS CAESAR TI AVG F DIVI AVG N PONT TR POT II". This inscription identifies Drusus as the son of Tiberius Augustus and grandson of the deified Augustus, noting his offices of pontifex and his second tenure of tribunician power. The obverse depicts the confronting heads of two little boys resting upon crossed cornucopias, separated by a winged caduceus.
